In recognition of Juneteenth on Thursday, June 19th, 2025, there will be no transit services, allowing Bus Operators and staff to honor this day with their friends and loved ones. In addition, the lobby and offices will also be closed. VVTA will be back on operating regular Bus Service on Friday, June 20th.
The Emancipation Proclamation, issued by Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862, took effect on January 1, 1863. However, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, that the last enslaved people in the Confederacy were freed. This day, known as Juneteenth, was first celebrated in 1866 and continues to be a significant day of remembrance and celebration.
